More about the projekt
Books and their stories spark our imagination, allow us to identify with characters, and at the same time shape our view of society.
What kind of society do we live in? Does it match the images in the books we read to children or that children read themselves? In most children’s books, children have a mom and a dad, live in a single-family home, speak German, drive to vacation destinations, celebrate Christmas, can participate in all social activities, and look forward to school. Yet our society is so much more colorful and diverse, sh<aped by far more ways of life and realities.
We want all children to have the opportunity to see themselves and their realities reflected in books and stories, and to gain insight into the lives of others. That’s why we created the Glitzerkiste: a box of books that tell a variety of stories and reflect diversity.
Currently, the Glitzerkiste includes books for children ages 0–10 and several reference books on the following topics:
- Racism
- People of Color¹/ Black people in leading roles
- Self-determined children
- Trans identity
- Intersex
- Gender roles
- Rainbow families
- Disabilities
- Mental health conditions, such as depression
- Emotions, such as fear
- Friendship
- Multilingualism
- Religious holidays
- Classism
- Diversity of families

- Which books would you like? Feel free to suggest topics!
Books can be borrowed for a period of approximately 2 to 4 weeks, subject to individual arrangement.
Select the books that are right for you from our online catalog. Alternatively, we can put together a selection based on the information you provide.
We are currently working on educational resources to support your work with the topics described. Until they are ready, you can find some educational information here: https://kinderwelten.net/publikationen. ³
We welcome suggestions for additional topics and book recommendations, as well as feedback and constructive criticism. We are even more delighted when the books are read by children and adults alike 🙂
Notes ³ In our opinion, the Institute for the Situational Approach effectively addresses the topic of diversity in early childhood and can be used as a source of information.
